Carpal tunnel syndrome is the condition of the hand in which median nerve of the hand become compressed between carpal ligament and also other structures in the carpal tunnel causing pain and stinging of the hands. It is a painful disease caused by nerve compression in the carpal tunnel. Patients who are suffering from carpal tunnel disorder, the tunnel of bones in their wrist has narrowed. And this narrowed tunnel leads to weakness in the hands and fingers and causes a numbness, tingly feeling and sensation of burning in the palm of the hands. Some people may feel their fingers useless, swollen and not able to feel hot and cold by touch. Women have greater risk with carpal tunnel syndrome compared to men.
There are unknown causes of carpal tunnel syndrome. Muscle imbalance of wrist and hands lead to a joint imbalance by which there can be unequal pressures on the joint, and which causes one side of the joint may be loose and the other side of the joint may be compressed. Excess pressure on the median nerve in the wrist and wrist fracture can cause this disease. It is most commonly developed in a person who uses repeated vibrating hand tools. Another possibility of carpal tunnel syndrome is that repeated work stress on wrist which injures the carpal tunnel tendons. Carpal tunnel syndrome disorder is also associated with pregnancy because of fluid retention and some diseases such as diabetes, thyroid disease, or rheumatoid arthritis.
Symptoms of carpal tunnel disease:
- Itching in the fingers and palm of the hands
- Sensation of burning, tingly feeling, numbness and pain in the index and middle fingers and especially in thumb.
- Wrist fracture
- Losing gripping strength in the hands to hold small object
- The symptoms of this disease can be usually felt during the night time.
Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome:
- Wrist injuries
- fractures, joint dislocations, and arthritis can narrow the tunnel
- pressure on median nerve
- fluid retention in the pregnancy
Carpal tunnel disease can be treated by wearing wrist brace and reducing the pressure on the hand nerves and using some medication your wrist can prevent and cures the carpal tunnel syndrome.
