Some kind of injuries annoys sports participants. All of them are minor by knowing what we do and early signs can prevent those injuries from becoming shrewish problems.

Know About Achilles Tendon Repair

by kerlanjobe 14. November 2011 04:41

Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in our body. Generally this tendon is injured in sports and other rigorous activities. Especially in developed countries, there has been a great chance for Achilles tendon injuries.

Most commonly, Achilles tendon injuries can cause swelling, pain and inability to do certain movements or activities. This condition can be caused by overuse of joints due to activities like jumping, running and some strenuous physical activity, and certain systemic, predisposing diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. People with Achilles tendon injury generally experience severe pain after the periods of inactivity. So, people experience pain after walking in the morning, and when getting up after sitting for longer periods.

Some of the factors that cause Achilles tendon injuries include:

1. Lower extremity mal-alignments

2. Muscle weakness

3. Reduced flexibility

4. Imbalance

5. Overweight

6. Leg length discrepancy

7. Excessive loading of the body

8. Some training errors

Achilles tendon injuries can be treated through several ways. Usually, you won’t experience any symptoms before the rupture, but several studies shown that tissue degeneration at and around the rupture area will take place. This condition leads to poor blood circulation and then any sudden and repetitive movements can lead to Achilles tendon ruptures.

Surgery is the long-term and most preferable way to treat Achilles tendon. Anesthesia will be given before performing the surgery. The surgeon makes a vertical cut at the back of your heal. Then the ends of the ruptured tendon are brought together. They are stitched to help the tendons to heal. Then the skin wounds are closed with clips or stitches. The surgery needs 3-4 days stay in the hospital.

How to Choose a Sports Medicine Doctor?

by kerlanjobe 26. September 2011 23:07

There are lots of doctors available, many of whom are good at what they do. This article provides useful information to help an athlete determine what to look for in a sports medicine doctor.

Initially, you need to make distinction between a primary care sports medicine doctor and orthopedic sports medicine doctor. There are some very good orthopedic sports medicine doctors available. But, if your problem is non surgical, then what to see further can be little confusing.

Primary care sports medicine physicians have an extensive scope of background training. These physicians have completed Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatric residency training or Emergency Medicine. Most of the primary care sports medicine specialists have also completed a fellowship in sports medicine and also have specific knowledge of soft tissue injuries, biomechanics and various other issues that an athlete will suffer from, like endocrine issues, gastrointestinal problems, anemia, etc. When you are going to choose a primary care sports medicine specialist, you have to make sure that the doctor has completed a sports medicine fellowship. Furthermore, there are some specialists become board certified, which means they have highest level of skills and knowledge in the field of sports medicine. But, it is not essential to find a board certified physician; in case you are looking for a qualified specialist, this may be the qualification to consider for.

One of the most essential aspects while choosing a sports medicine specialist is to find a physician who understands the mindset of the athlete. Most athletes who become injured are told not to run or not to ride for an extended period of time. But, for an athlete these things are not fair. In case the sports medicine specialist is an athlete or understands the mindset of an athlete, then the doctor will get a better understanding of the athlete’s expectations and can build a better recovery plan that can meet both the patient’s and athlete’s goals.

Get referrals from your friends or other athletes. It can also help you to find a good specialist. Research about physician’s credentials, enquire for references. A short discussion with the specialist and few questions can tell you a lot about the physician. Don’t simply go with the first doctor you consult, do proper research before making a final decision.
